What does a Dietitian do?

A dietitian is a university qualified expert in the field of human nutrition and diet therapy. A dietitian possess the skills to counsel and support people to make changes in their eating habits to promote health, and can modify diets to help manage ongoing medical conditions, such as heart disease (high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol), diabetes, malnutrition, obesity, cancer, food allergies and intolerances. This is done through individual consultations where a dietitian works one-on-one with the client.

Dietitians are also able to translate the science of nutrition to help you plan healthy meals and snacks for you and your family. These can be tailored to suit your specific needs, such as vegetarian or gluten free diet.

Unlike popular 'diet programs', a dietitian does not tell clients what they should and should not eat. Instead a dietitian teaches them how to make long-term, sustainable changes to their diet to significantly improve health and quality of life.
